    How to create a Process Explorer log Messenger troubleshooting

    The steps below will help you to create a Process Explorer log:
    1. Visit the following Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
    Note Process Explorer is a free utility that captures the processes that run on your computer so that you can create a log file of these processes. 
    2.  Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then download the version of Process Explorer that applies to your operating system.
    Note This is a zipped file. You must have an unzipping utility, such as WinZip, to unzip the file. You can download a trial version of WinZip by visiting the following Web site:
    http://www.winzip.com 
    3.  Locate the folder where you saved the downloaded file, and then double-click the downloaded file to extract it to the folder that you want. 
    4.  Start Messenger. 
    5.  Locate the folder where you extracted the downloaded file, and then double-click procexp.exe to view the processes that are running on your computer.
     
    Note: The first time you start Processor Explorer, you receive the following message:
    Symbols are not currently configured. You must configure symbols in order to view thread start address and stack information. Install the Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows Package and configure a symbol server address in the Options|Configure Symbols dialog for the best symbol support. 
    6.  Click OK. 
    7.  In the Process Explorer window, click File, and then click Save. 
    8.  Enter a name for the file, and then click Save.

    How to create a http trace for Messenger troubleshooting

    The steps below will help you to create a http trace using the Fiddler tool:
    1.  Visit the following Web site, and then install the most recent version of the Fiddler tool:
    http://www.fiddlertool.com/Fiddler2/version.asp
     
    2.  To start the Fiddler tool, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Fiddler. 
     
    3.  In the Fiddler window, make sure that Capture Traffic is selected on the File menu.
    Note This menu option toggles between On and Off every time that you click it. Make sure that there is a check mark next to the Capture Traffic option. 
     
    4.  Now that the Fiddler trace file is running, perform the same operation that previously caused the Messenger problem you were having. 
     
    5.  After the issue is reproduced, switch back to the HTTP Fiddler window. 
     
    6.  On the File menu, click Capture Traffic to stop the data collection. 
     
    7.  Click anywhere in the HTTP Sessions window. 
     
    8.  On the File menu, click Save. 
     
    9.  In the Save list, click Sessions, and then click as ZIP to save the HTTP Fiddler trace file. 
     
    10.  Save the file to the folder that you want.
     
    11.  After you collect the trace file, remove the HTTP Fiddler tool. To do this, follow these steps:
    a.  Click Start, click Run, type control appwiz.cpl , and then press ENTER to open the Add or Remove Programs window. If you are running Windows Vista, click the Start button, and then type control appwiz.cpl in the text box. 
    b.  Click Change or Remove Programs. 
    c.  In the list of programs, click Fiddler, and then click Change/Remove. 
    d.  Follow the steps to remove the tool.   

    How to create a Messenger IDCRL log

    The steps below will help you to create a Messenger IDCRL log: :
     
    1.  Click Start, click Run, type cmd , and then press ENTER to open a Command Prompt window. If you are running Windows Vista, click , and then type cmd in the text box. 
     
    2.  Type the following text exactly as it is shown, and then press ENTER:
    REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\Trace /v Level /d 99 /t REG_DWORD 
     
    3.  If the operation is completed successfully, you will receive the message "Operation completed successfully." If the operation is unsuccessful, you will receive an error message. If the key that this procedure adds is already on your computer you may be prompted "Overwrite (Y/N)?" Press Y . 
     
    4.  Restart the computer. 
     
    5.  Sign in to Messenger again to let the issue occur again. When you sign in, the log file is generated in the My Documents folder. 
     
    6.  If you are using MSN Messenger 7.5, look for the file MSIDCRL.txt. If you are using Windows Live Messenger, look for the file Msidcrltrace{7108E71A-9926-4FCB-BCC9-9A9D3F32E423}.txt. 
     
    7.  Follow these steps to turn off IDCRL logging:
    a.  Click Start, click Run, type cmd , and then press ENTER to open a Command Prompt window. If you are running Windows Vista, click , and then type cmd in the text box.  
    b.  At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\Trace 
    c.  When you are prompted to permanently delete the key, press Y .  

    How to create a Messenger connectivity Log

    The steps below will help you to create a Messenger connectivity log:
    1. Exit Messenger by right-clicking the "Messenger" icon in the notification area at the far right of the Windows task bar, and then click "Exit."
    2. Delete the old Messenger connection log file:
    Note If connection logging is not already enabled, you will not see the MsnMsgr.txt file in step c of the following procedure. If you do not see this file, go to step 3.
    a.  Launch MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, but do not sign in.
    b.  On the File menu, click Open Received Files.
    c.  A Windows explorer window will launch. Locate the MSNMSGR.TXT file in this folder and press DELETE.

    3. Turn on Messenger connection logging:
    a. Start Messenger but do not sign in.
    b. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."
    c. In the left navigation bar, click "Connection."
    d. Click "Advanced Settings."
    e. Under Connection Logging, make sure that the "Save a log of my server connections to help troubleshoot connection problems" check box is selected.
    f. Click "OK."
     
    4. Sign in to Messenger again by clicking Sign In and wait until the error message appears again. The new connectivity log file, MSNMsgr.txt, is generated when you attempt to sign in.
     
    5. To access the generated MSNMSGR.TXT file:
    a.  Launch MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, but do not sign in.
    b.  On the File menu, click Open Received Files. 
    c.  A windows explorer window will launch. Locate the MSNMSGR.TXT file in this folder.
